MI at the RSNA 2024 Annual Meeting
At the beginning of December, the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) held its Annual Meeting in Chicago, which featured an impressive turnout from the Department of Medical Imaging, with several faculty and trainees presenting work, delivering lectures and winning awards.
Abstracts, Scientific Posters & Educational Exhibits
Dr. Kay Wu, PGY2 Diagnostic Radiology Resident, presented her abstract titled, “DeepSPINE: A Comprehensive Deep Learning Model for Multi-Task Lumbar Spine MRI Analysis,” which aimed to extend upon a deep learning model tailored for comprehensive, automated analysis of lumbar spine MRI to detect and grade nine degenerative spinal conditions. Dr. Jesús Arenós, Pediatric General Radiology Fellow at The Hospital for Sick Children, presented his abstract titled, “Imaging of myxoid-containing tumors in children and adolescents,” (Magdalena P. Reyes, MD, AndréaS. Doria, MD, PhD, MSc, MBA, Oscar M. Navarro, MD), of which he was the lead author. In his abstract, Dr. Arenós aimed to list pediatric myxoid-containing tumours, discuss different imaging modalities used and recognize the characteristic MRI signal of the myxoid matrix to facilitate the differential diagnosis of soft tissue tumors. MI professor Dr. Masoom Haider co-authored a poster that was presented at the meeting, titled “AI Detects Missed Small Renal Masses on Single Phase CT,” along with Associate Professor Dr. Satheesh Krishna. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the performance of a UNet-based lesion segmentation model on SRMs missed by radiologists. See the poster here.
MI Professor & Director of Abdominal MRI, JDMI, Dr. Kartik Jhaveri delivered a lecture at the RSNA Annual Meeting on December 2, titled “Rectal Cancer MRI: Post Treatment Follow-up.
Adjunct Assistant Professor Dr. Noah Ditkofsky delivered two talks at the RSNA annual meeting, titled “It’s a Full Moon: A Nightmare on Night Float, Trauma Cases” and “Band-Aids Don’t Fix Bullet Holes: Ballistic Injuries.” Dr. Ditkofsky also presented a poster titled, “Breaking Barriers: A Guide to Traumatic Diaphragmatic Injuries.”
Associate Professor & Director, Abdominal and Pelvic CT, JDMI, Dr. Satheesh Krishna, presented numerous works at the RSNA Annual Meeting, including an oral presentation and several posters:

Emergency Radiology Fellow at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Dr. Vinu Mathew, delivered an oral presentation at the RSNA Annual Meeting titled, “Low-Field (64mT) Portable Brain MRI in Hospitalized and Emergency Department Patients: Real-World Experience from Our First Two Years,” as well as an educational exhibit, titled “Breaking Barriers: A guide to Traumatic Diaphragmatic Injuries.”
Dr. Sahu Asutosh, Emergency, Trauma and Acute Care Radiology Fellow at St. Michael’s Hospital, presented an educational exhibit at the RSNA Annual Meeting, titled “Cardio-pulmonary Complications of Cancer Therapeutics,” which he worked on with Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre’s Cardiothoracic Imaging staff (Binita Chacko, Lan-Chau Kha, Issac Yang, Anastasia Oikonomou, Christian Houbois).
MI Professor Dr. Mary-Louise Greer delivered two pediatric imaging educational exhibits as well as presented an educational course as an invited speaker, titled “360 Assessment of Contrast in Children: Looking at the Bowel, at the Liver, at Bubbles, and at the Environment.” The educational exhibits presented were:

MI Pediatric Neuroradiology Fellow Dr. Caroline Rutten presented two posters to this year’s RSNA Annual Meeting:
- Playground Injuries: When it’s Not All Fun and Games – a retrospective review of playground injuries (Rutten Caroline, Campbell Ryan, Perez Manuela, Mizzi Trent, Branson Helen, Stimec Jennifer, Greer Mary-Louise)
- Prevalence and complications of abnormal pancreaticobiliary junction in children as seen on MRCP (Rutten Caroline, Saeedi Khuld, Gonska Tanja, Ng Vicky, Sayed Blayne, Chavhan Ghavhan
MI Assistant Professor Dr. Farah Cadour delivered two presentations on cardiac MRI in genet-positive patients with arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, titled, “Prognostic Significance of Cardiac MRI in Gene-positive arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy” and “Cardiac MRI Genotype-phenotype Associations in Gene-positive arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy” (Farah Cadour MD MSc, Sarin Lekchuensakul MD, Danna Spears MD MSc, Melanie Care MSc, and Kate Hanneman MD MPH, JDMI), which allows for identification of genotype-phenotype associations and prognostic factors in gene-positive ACM patients.
Dr. Cadour also presented an educational exhibit titled, “Emergency Non-Traumatic Cardiac Imaging for the Non-Cardiac Radiologist” (Farah Cadour, Filipe Sanchez, Felipe Torres, Christian Houbois, Jonatas Favero Prietto Dos Santos, Matthew Aitken, Elsie Nguyen, Bradly Allen, Roberta Catania, Michael Patlas, and Kate Hanneman), which aimed to provide an overview of the cardiac imaging findings that can be identified on chest imaging made in the emergency department for other indications. This exhibit also received a Cum Laude Award at the 2024 RSNA Annual Meeting.
NEW PGY5 Diagnostic Radiology Resident Dr. Lilyane Saleh as well as Assistant Professor Dr. Rajesh Bhayana presented their scientific poster, titled "Impact of brief mindfulness attention training on radiologist attention and nodule detection: a pilot randomized control trial." The purpose of this trial was to address attention lapses that could contribute to perceptual errors in radiology and assess whether brief MAT can improve radiologist attention and lung nodule detection.
NEW PGY4 Diagnostic Radiology Resident Dr. Yusuf Alibrahim presented his research, in collaboration with the Sunnybrook Neuroradiology group, titled "Compartmentalization of subarachnoid hemorrhage on CT suggesting first in-vivo visualization of the subarachnoid lymphatic-like membrane (SLYM)." This presentation also won a Certificate of Merit.
NEW Abdominal Imaging Fellow Dr. Bhavana Shyamanur, presented her exhibit titled, "The Atypical and Equivocal Appendix," on which she collaborated with Assoc. Professor Dr. Satheesh Krishna Jeyaraj.
NEW Abdominal Imaging Fellow Dr. Maame Akobeng, presented her educational exhibit, titled "Oncocytic Renal Neoplasms: Unravel the Conundrum." This project was a multicentre collaboration, including from Assoc. Profesor Dr. Satheesh Krishna Jayaraj. Awards
Department faculty and trainees also won numerous awards at this year’s RSNA Annual Meeting.
Fourth-year medical student Aly Fawzy, under the supervision of MI Assistant Professor Dr. Andrew Brown, received the RSNA 2024 Trainee Research Prize in Imaging Informatics for his abstract titled, “Computer Vision in Medical Imaging Service Delivery: Evaluating Process Capacity of CT scans.” Aly also received the RSNA 2024 Medical Travel Scholarship for his interest in Radiology.
Drs. Neetika Gupta, Shivaprakash Hiremath and Elka Miller received a Cum Laude Award for their educational exhibit, titled “Pre- & post-operative imaging of Craniosynostosis: What do radiologists need to know?”
Drs. Shivaprakash Hiremath, Neetika Gupta, Pradeep Krishnan and Elka Miller received a Certificate of Merit for their exhibit titled, “Antenatal and postnatal imaging in congenital posterior fossa anomalies: pattern recognition and diagnostic approach.”
Drs. Neetika Gupta, Susan Blaser, Pradeep Krishnan, Suzanne Laughlin and Elka Miller also received a Certificate of Merit for their exhibit, titled “Diagnosing Intracranial Masses and their Mimics in-utero.”
U of T medical student Matthew Mueller, under supervision of Dr. Ferco Berger, won the RSNA 2024 Trainee Research Prize for his research project, “Shock Thyroid: Does it Exist? Incidence and Relevance of CT Signs of Shock Thyroid in Hemodynamically Unstable Patients,” in the Emergency Radiology category.
Dr. Farah Cadour received a Cum Laude Award for her exhibit titled, "Emergency Non-Traumatic Cardiac Imaging for the Non-Cardiac Radiologist," which had contributions from Filipe Sanchez, Felipe Torres, Christian Houbois, Jonatas Favero Prietto Dos Santos, Matthew Aitken, Elsie Nguyen, Bradly Allen, Roberta Catania, Michael Patlas, and Kate Hanneman.

NEW Asst. Professors Dr. Timothy Lim and Dr. Suradech Suthiphosuwan, who received a Certificate of Merit for their exhbit titled, "Central vein sign and MRI biomarkers in MS" at this year's RSNA Annual Meeting.
