As artificial intelligence continues to aid in enhancement and efficiency of radiology, the Department of Medical Imaging (MI) continues to invest in technological advances and research through our dedicated AI Chairs and faculty. To help advance this work, the Department is hosting its inaugural AI in MI Fundraising Dinner, held on May 29, 2025, at Carlu, a historic venue in the heart of Toronto, Ontario. The evening will also celebrate the 105th anniversary of the Department of Medical Imaging.
The Venue
The Carlu, originally opened in 1930 as “Eaton’s Seventh Floor,” was commissioned by Timothy Eaton and Lady Eaton, and brought to life by famed French architect, known for his Art Moderne style, Jacques Carlu.
Inspired by the architect’s signature technique also known as streamlined monumentalism, the event space features distinct design choices including elaborate colour palettes, artwork, architectural details and room appointments, as well as the magnificent Lalique fountain in the centre of The Round Room, where MI’s fundraising dinner will be hosted.
The venue at 444 Yonge St. in College Park was reopened in 2003 as The Carlu after an extensive restoration and is now recognized as one of Toronto’s best examples Art Moderne architecture and has been designated as a National Historic Site of Canada.
The Food
The Carlu will be catering the evening, including a three-course meal and refreshments before and after dinner. Guests can enjoy canapés during cocktail hour as they arrive and get acquainted with other guests. For dinner, guests will have a choice of soup or salad for a starter, Ontario beef strip loin or fish for dinner*, and blueberry cheesecake or Neapolitan mille-feuille for dessert.
Coffee and tea will be served after dinner and a hosted bar will be available throughout the evening. Each guest will receive three complimentary alcoholic beverages at the bar throughout the night as well as choice of red or white wine at the table with dinner. Complimentary water and non-alcoholic soft drinks will be available throughout the night and a tap & go bar will be open for guests to purchase additional drinks.
*A vegetarian option will also be available upon request. Guests with dietary restrictions can email David Tihanyi at David.tihanyi@utoronto.ca. A questionnaire for dinner choices and dietary restrictions will also be sent to guests closer to the event date.

The evening ambiance will be provided by live band Synergy & Soul Quartet, featuring a mix of music including jazz, pop, rock, soul and R&B to soundtrack the night of networking, dinner and boogying on the dance floor.
There will also be an interactive AI photobooth to help celebrate MI’s 105th anniversary, which will allow guests to travel 105 years in the past or future with integrated AI.
The evening will also feature short remarks from the Department’s Chair, Dr. Michael Patlas, Dr. Kate Hanneman, VC, Research and Temerty Faculty of Medicine Dean Lisa Robinson during dinner, as well as a keynote speech delivered by Dr. Errol Colak. Dr. Colak is U of T’s Odette Professor in Artificial Intelligence for Medical Imaging, Vice-Chair of the RSNA AI Committee and Staff Radiologist at St. Michael’s Hospital.
