Creating Safe Spaces: Initial Discussion on Anti-Racism Work in Healthcare Anti-Racism Work in Healthcare

The next Support, Inclusion, Diversity, Equity (onSIDE) education session focuses on the pressing issue of Anti-Racism Work in Health Care. The session is hosted by Dr. Elsie Nguyen - Vice-Chair on Support, Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity, and covers topics as "Considering our roles in reconciliation" by Dr. Chase McMurren (Office of Indigenous Health, Temerty Faculty of Medicine). 

Lydia-Joi Marshall (President, Black Health Alliance) will discuss how she experienced racism as a health care professional and offers recommendations and actionable items. The session concludes with a panel discussion on a scenario of racism in health care and its impact on patient care.

Chase Everett McMurren, MD, is the Theme Lead for Indigenous Medical Education in the MD Program and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto. Ms. Lydia-Joi Marshall has a focus on championing issues in health equity and combating racism in all of its forms. Lydia-Joi currently serves as the president of the Board of directors of the Black Health Alliance, a not-for-profit organization which works tirelessly to advocate for those who have been marginalized by race.  Lydia-Joi consistently strives to challenge diverse groups to examine systemic disparities, and has done so through many platforms including multi-disciplinary published research, leading dynamic international workshops and most recently as a TEDx Toronto Speaker addressing her experiences in the Canadian health care system.
