Earlier this month, the Department of Medial Imaging hosted its annual Summer Resident Retreat, which brought together MI’s cohort of 63 Diagnostic Radiology PGY1-5 residents, community radiologists and MI faculty for a day of insightful talks, networking and catered lunch.
The day started early with breakfast followed by the first lecture, Radiology and the Law: Medico-Legal Risk in Canadian Diagnostic Radiology, from Adjunct Assistant Professor Dr. D’Arcy Little, which gave an in-depth overview of the legal risks in diagnostic radiology, diagnostic errors, strategies to avoid errors, and a look ahead at AI, governance & liability, pulling from Dr. Little’s experience as a Medico-legal expert consultant since 2017.
This was followed by an engaging talk from Dr. Christopher Buckle, Neuroradiologist and Founder & Chief of Radiology, Snowy Owl Acute Radiology (SOAR), titled Radiology Working Models, which took residents through an overview of life during and after training before a round of ‘radiology roleplay,’ where residents could explore potential radiology career paths including working abroad, staying in Ontario, working in another province, choosing a teleradiology career, getting more training, and changing careers/getting a side hustle.
The morning wrapped up with a networking lunch where residents had the chance to network and talk with community radiologists from across the province. The day ended with a team building social activity at an escape room, organized and led by PGY3 DR resident & Resident Social Committee Director Dr. Christie Cheng.

“Dr. Christopher Buckle's Radiology Working Models talk sparked discussion on how to evaluate career options. Rather than a generic overview, it broke the decision down into dialogue and thought-provoking discussion around different practice options. Furthermore, Ray Foley of the Ontario Association of Radiologists, gave a talk summarizing OAR advocacy, from new fee codes to expanded CT and MRI approvals, and it was genuinely encouraging to see how much positive change the organization continues to drive on behalf of radiologists.
The networking lunch was also a highlight, giving residents a chance to speak directly with radiologists across a range of career stages and goals.
