Formal electives in Medical Imaging are encouraged for those wishing to pursue a career in Medical Imaging (Radiology) and those wishing to develop skills in image interpretation and learning the appropriateness guidelines in utilizing imaging studies for diagnosis for use in clinical practice. Various electives sites offer a minimum of 2-week and a maximum of 4-week electives with a different limited number of students per site (please see Faculty of Medicine Electives website for more details).

Electives Experience

The electives in Medical Imaging are self directed although some hospitals provide a structured experience depending on the career aspirations of each individual - which should be declared in advance of start of elective with respective hospital Electives Supervisor. The student would join film review sessions with residents and attend the resident teaching rounds and sometimes the Year 3 Medical Student interactive Teaching sessions where and when applicable.

The student also is mandated to use the University of Toronto Department of Medical Imaging Electives Teaching Site (password access required), where students can learn from various narrated presentations on approach to imaging studies and many interactive teaching cases. Students wishing to pursue a residency in Radiology are encouraged to take an evening On-call with a resident to gain a full understanding of their potential career.

Medical students are encouraged to contribute teaching cases or presentations for the website after consultation with the respective Supervisors.

The final evaluation depends on full attendance and participation during the elective and a certain percentage on the use of the web-based Teaching Files.

Visiting Elective Students (N. American & Int'l Non U of T)

Non-University of Toronto and International medical students are welcome to do their electives in the Department of Medical Imaging. The electives are offered to medical students enrolled in a certified medical school and during their Clerkship years only. The elective is not offered during the Academic year from September to December to accommodate the University of Toronto 4th year students' mandatory elective time period. However, if spots are available the elective request could be accommodated. Medical students are encouraged to contribute teaching cases or presentations for the website after consultation with their respective Supervisors.

The final evaluation depends on full attendance and participation during the elective and a certain percentage on the use of the web-based Teaching Files.
