Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, including the Holland Orthopaedic and Arthritic Centre, is a 1200-bed facility serving as a regional centre for trauma, cardiac, stroke, burns and cancer and is the largest critical care facility in the country. The hospital is going through a significant period of expansion with an additional 300,000 square feet of space contained on four new floors to the hospital's main wing, which will become the new home for the perinatal and gynaecology program.
The emergency department is also undergoing renovation to double its capacity. Within the Research Institute there are over 160 scientists with whom there is the opportunity to undertake collaborative research. The University Research Imaging department is embedded within Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre supporting translational imaging research in areas such as breast cancer, tissue perfusion and PET scanning as well as stroke, dementia and cardiovascular pathobiology.
